North Yorkshire Moors - North Yorks
The spectacular North York Moors, heather clad and romantic transport you almost to the pages of Wuthering Heights. The A169 that takes you there is probably one of the most scenic roads in the country and breathtaking. Golf Balls, Fylingdales MOD headquarter landmark used to dominate the A169. Now replaced by a triangular wedge, its dulled the eerie atmosphere of likened to the script of a spooky Dean Kootz novel, to a bit of a dull soap opera experience. There's been many a sighting near here, according to locals and the area that includes the Infamous Salters Gate Inn that was, was the location haunt for Americann Werewolf in London, need we say more?
Signposts across the moors will lead you to moorland villages. You may be lucky enough to see the steam train go by hooting and puffing smoke. Goathland is Heartbeat's Aidensfiled. A stunning village where sheep roam freely,so do keep your dog on the lead. Heartbeat was filmed here and around Whitby for over ten years and the villagers mingled and grew to know the actors as if they were locals. Alfred, Greengrasse's dog, was as popular as the actors and was replaced a couple of times due to old age-but is still going well.
The vast open moorland was ideal for film locations, though filming at night could be very cold. Believe me, we know, as the occassional extra. But dressing in 60's style again with bouffant hair, laquer that now we know destroys the ozone layer, and dancing the Locomotion in white plastic boots, seemed to be worth it. The sideburns, flares and tank tops though, may have tipped the scales the other way.
Winding roads and dirt tracks lead you deeper into the moors and smaller villages. Egton, Danby, Castleston, Beckhole, Rosedale, Levisham, Lastingham all have their own charm and individulality. There are some fine inns and pubs out here too that serve the finest Yorkshire Fayre. A particular favourite is Hutton-Le-Hole. It's like stepping into another world. Sheep roam gently on the grass divided by a stream flanked by rows of the most charming cottages. There is a nice pub here and the Ryedale Folk Museum is a must.
