Whitby Fishing History

Whitby's seafaring history dates back hundred of years. Whitby was the most popular port in Britain in 1706 building up to 130 ships in that year. Large vessels continued to be built up until 1908.

Whitby Whalers

Whaling in Whitby began in 1753-1833.  55 ships were engaged in whaling. For the poeple of Whitby this was an exciting venture but was recognised as being very dangerous. Slender whale boats, lowered from the ships, manned by a crew of 6 did the actual killing of the whales with harpoons.

Over 25,00 seals, 55 polar bears and nearly 3,00 whales were brought back to Whitby. Boiler Houses alongside the harbour rendered the blubber into oil.

Whitby's Desperate Housewives

When the time came for the return of the wahling ship to Whitby, close watch was kept for the sign of the masthead appearing over the horizon. If a pair of whale jawbones were triced up the mast then the waiting Whitby fishermens' wives knew that the ships was full. Many lives had been taken on some trips.

The reminder of those days comes in the form of a huge whale's jawbone sitting on Whitby's West Cliff. This was presented to Whitby by Thor Dhal of Norway in 1963.

Whitby's William Scorseby

The jawbones are also a reminder of Whitby's Captain William Scorseby senior, inventor of the crow's nest, later adapted by every fishing fleet throughout the world. It was from here the traditional cry A FALL A FALL began to be heard on all the oceans where the whale was hunted in his lifetime.

Captain Scoresby was the most successful and daring of all captains in the whale fishery at this time, capturing 533 whales. He also took his sailing ship "The Resolution" to the highes latitude within the Artic, getting within 510 miles of the North Pole

Parkol Marine Whitby

Parkol Marine Whitby continues Whitby's boat building tradition, as if very successful, supporting fishing fleets througout the UK.
