Set in the heart of Herriot country in the Yorkshire Dales countryside, W R Outhwaite & Son, Ropemakers (now trading as Outhwaites Ltd) was established in 1905 and manufactures barrier ropes, bannister ropes, pet accessories, dog leads, skipping ropes, clothes line and equestrian ropes.
Recent expansion has seen the Ropeworks grow to over 10,000 square feet and it attracts thousands of visitors every year, who come to watch traditional ropemaking in progress. Part of the facination of watching ropes being made is the satisfaction of seeing the complete process, in which many thin strands of yarn are rapidly twisted into a strong rope. and to enjoy the facilities on offer, including a well-stocked shop full of gift ideas.
Opening Times
9.00am - 5.30pm Monday - Friday all year (except Christmas and Good Friday). Wheelchair walkway (Monday - Friday only)
