Assistance Dogs For The Disabled
The Disability Discrimination Act exempts Assistance Dogs for the Disabled from normal no dog rules. It is the person that has the disability, not the dog, therefore the dog is vital. Working animals, not pets, Assistance Dogs enable a disabled person to function and indeed are a lifeline. These dogs which include Guide Dogs for the blind, Hearing Dogs and Service Dogs are always identified by a coat stating their function.
Training & Independence
They are trained to the highest standard of discipline and respond to the commands of the owner. They should not be distracted and never fed.
Like everyone else, people with disabilities like to be independent. Those who need help, a blind person for example, will rest the handle of the harness on the dog's back as a sign they are happy to accept help.
These wonderful animals give people with certain disabilities the chance to lead as much of an independent life as they possibly can. This includes of course, for their owners to be able to enjoy a well deserved holiday.
